Since its inception, the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) has been dedicated to comprehensive medical education spanning undergraduate, post-graduate, and continuing medical education. This commitment extends notably to its Manual Medicine Series, which has evolved significantly over the years.

The Manual Medicine Series originated from a meeting of the North American Academy of Manipulative Medicine in 1977. Initially exclusive to MD physicians, the series expanded its scope following advocacy from John Mennell, M.D., who sought inclusion of DO physicians. Drs. Paul Kimberly and Philip E. Greenman were pivotal in shaping the inaugural Principles of Manual Medicine course, which debuted in August 1978 at MSU. This course marked a milestone by being accredited by both MD and DO professions.

Over time, the curriculum expanded to encompass various techniques such as Muscle Energy Technique, High Velocity Low Amplitude Technique, and Cranial Technique, among others. The Principles of Manual Medicine course became a prerequisite for advanced training modules. In 1980, the series admitted its first physical therapist, sparking initial concerns but ultimately proving successful. This move reflected Dr. Mennell's vision to broaden the educational scope beyond physicians, acknowledging the contributions of allied health professionals in manual medicine.

Today, MSUCOM's Manual Medicine Series serves as a global benchmark in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) education. It attracts participants from around the world, including countries such as Canada, United Kingdom, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan, among others. This series, renowned as the "Gold Standard" in its field, continues to offer 7 to 10 courses annually, each spanning 3 to 5 days. Expert instructors, including board-certified physicians from our very own osteopathic manipulative medicine clinic and other content specialists, ensure the delivery of high-quality education across various manual medicine disciplines.

In summary, MSUCOM's Manual Medicine Series exemplifies a pioneering approach to interprofessional education, fostering collaboration among physicians, osteopaths, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers worldwide.
